I highly encourage you to listen to the audio of these, or at least turn on the transcript, because there is so much more to it than you will see below. I think that will be the predominant form factor for this segment going forward, but if you are a stolid “I wanna read stuff!” kind of person, here you go:
We were outside under our patio table umbrella, listening to the rain, and decided to channel the water energy into a post about Jenelle’s carving of The Creature From the Black Lagoon. In case you are simply looking for the link to buy this thing of grotesque beauty, here you go: The Creature
What is it?
“It’s the Creature of from the Black Lagoon. FROM the Black Lagoon.”
What inspired you to carve this design?
“Well, it was one of my first prints that I did up at the cottage when I did my first weekend of ‘I’m just going to grab some erasers,’ and I brought my linocutting carver, and I was going to follow in the steps of Serena at Cactus Cloud Art and she had inspired me to try this out because she was having such a fun time with it, and I…that’s why I did it because I started out making monsters because I was like ‘I don’t know what to do, I’ll just start making monsters.’”
Which element was the hardest to get right and why?
“Ummm, I think it was his teeth, because they’re like little itty bitty tiny teeth that come up, sort of, and they were just really hard to get, because I wasn’t great at it, at linocutting at that time, so it’s hard to get it very tiny and good.”
What surprised you about this piece?
“That it is still one of my favorites today, because most of my prints back then, or most of my stamps back then, I look at them and I’m like, ‘Man, I could have done that way better,’ but he’s still perfect.”
How does the finished product make you feel?
“Very happy, because I’ve always liked The Creature, because he’s not technically a monster, he’s just a creature trying to live, and he’s just trying to live his best life, and he finds this beautiful, gorgeous other creature, swimming in the water, not a creature, Julia Davis or whatever her name is, Julie? But he’s misunderstood and labeled as a monster, but he was actually just a kind creature trying to live his life.”
